Plug-and-Play 11.. IInnttrroodduuccttiioonn PPlluugg--aanndd--PPllaayy ((PPnnPP))?? Oversimplified, Plug-and-Play automatically tells the software (device drivers) where to find various pieces of hardware (devices) such as modems, network cards, sound cards, etc. Plug-and-Play's task is to match up physical devices with the software (device drivers) that operates them and to establish channels of communication between each device and its driver. In order to achieve this, PnP allocates the following "bus-resources" to both drivers and hardware: I/O addresses, IRQ's, DMA channels (ISA bus only), and memory regions. It's not the intent of this help to make you a Plug-and-Play guru. You can find more information about it in 'Plug-and-Play-HOWTO'. 22.. TThhee PPlluugg aanndd PPllaayy mmoodduullee This module allows the visualization of all the isa Pnp devices found in your computer. Some data about this device as well as the serial number, the device description, the device description, the supplier identification and the status (validation results on these devices). You can select one of these devices either to verify or to change your configurations. It's also possible to validate the configurations of those or to return to standard one. 33.. SSeelleeccttiinngg aa ddeevviiccee When you select a new device another window will show up with several configuration items, as well as the present configuration of each one. 44.. AAcccceepptt When selecting [Accept] a validation for all the devices configurations will be done. In case any error occur in any configuration of a certain device, the column 'Status' of this one will be marked with 'Failure'. If all the configurations for this device are correct, the 'Status' will be marked with 'OK'. The configuration file 55.. SSttaannddaarrdd When selecting the [Standard] button, a window will be showed asking if the user wants to revert the devices configuration to the standard. When selecting [Yes], the current configure file will be named '/etc/isapnp.conf.bkp' and a new configuration file will be generated, updating the information which is showed on the screen. 66.. RReeggiisstteerr After accepting the configurations, a button [Register] will be presented. When it's selected, information about devices detection will be showed. 77.. EExxiitt When selecting [Exit], the module is finished. Note that the configuration changes will be effective only when the button [Accept] is selected.
